At North Star, we believe in children and want to help them achieve their optimal abilities and reach for the stars. In fact, believing in and working with children, teens and their families is what we do. We’re Alaska’s premier behavioral health provider that specializes in helping young people with life’s challenges. North Star recognizes that childhood should be a time of joy, fulfillment, growth and nurturing care. We also recognize that situations happen that are beyond young people’s control or ability to effectively handle. Our programs at North Star work with the family and the community to help facilitate optimal growth and nurturing throughout times of childhood adversity. Our goal is to help young people get on a track that leads to a life of youthfulness – the life that children and adolescents deserve. North Star offers a continuum of care designed to specifically meet the unique needs of children at any given stage of childhood and adolescent development. Our highly specialized team of doctors, nurses, therapists and other professionals work with you to ensure quality behavioral health services. We also work closely with those you trust in your own community so that children and adolescents have the support they need to ensure a bright future, filled with childhood growth, fulfillment and joy. The unique challenges faced by children and teens are different from those of adults. North Star Hospital has two campuses, DeBarr and Bragaw to address the specific acute care and developmental needs of children and adolescents. At the DeBarr campus, we have a children’s unit (age 4-9), a pre-teen unit (age 10-12), and an adolescent boys unit (age 13-17). At Bragaw, we work with adolescent girls ages 13-17. Because the needs of children are different from those of pre-teens and teenagers, our programs are structured to meet each youth’s skill and level of understanding. North Star Behavioral Health is committed to providing an atmosphere where children and adolescents can increase an ability to trust others, work through life’s challenges and learn skills to effectively face their future. This is also achieved at our residential treatment program on DeBarr, next to the hospital, and out in Palmer. Our specialized long-term treatment programs offer services not matched by any others in the state. Our Palmer program works with boys ages 11-17 years old and is a certified wilderness-based program. Our DeBarr program in Anchorage helps preteen children and adolescent girls ages 17 years of age and younger. Both programs provide a variety of services unique to the state of Alaska. Our clinical teams are always striving to meet the changing needs of our state and in doing so, have now achieved TriCare/TriWest approval for our DeBarr RTC programs (meeting the needs of our military families and their children).
